Keystone

From comments, emails and IM's, it's clear to me that the third part of what Brice is now calling The Gigagiggles Trilemma has the popular vote: The Job is Not the Point. I'll tackle that one first then, but there's some more groundwork to lay out.

The answer given to the first question in the Westminster Catechism says, "Man's chief end is to glorify God, and enjoy him forever."

That's the keystone of my whole problem. Remove it, and nothing else serves any purpose. Or if you prefer, it's all four corners of the jigsaw puzzle. Everything must fit in that frame. The solution will grow and take shape from this point.

Wait, didn't you do a talk recently that addressed the "Games Matter" argument? And as for it being a Trilemma, I don't know if these options are mutually exclusive. I'd recommend something that combines "Games Matter" and "The Job is Not the Point."

But, the keystone that we're starting from is the right One. I believe there's room for being uniquely equipped to make Games that glorify God. I bet there's even a bit of enjoying him forever in the process. "Chariots of Fire" comes to mind...

Heh. Yes. And a lot of that talk is me trying to convince myself of that argument.

Definitely agree that the solution may not be one or any of the arguments...Deg's response on his blog also combined the two you mention. But...

You know, the Chariots of Fire metaphor isn't a bad place to begin to express one of the concerns I have. I'll start there next post...

"Heh. Yes. And a lot of that talk is me trying to convince myself of that argument."

Two quotes lately (here and here) are starting to convince me that games can be used as tools to do great things.

I'm also stepping out of my sphere of comfortable blog posts to convince myself that The Job is Not the Point.

Doing something that you excel at and doing it well *is* glorifying God. If God gives you the gift of a skill, then it's honoring that gift to do something with it, even if it's just that you make a darn good accountant.
